- These are longer phrases that are at least three or more words long.

Let’s pretend that you’re a food blogger who wants to write about cheap restaurants in New Zealand. You might think cheap restaurants New Zealand would be great keywords to generate traffic to your page. However, this term is broad and pretty generic.
Although you may believe it’s a good term because it gets thousands of results on the search engine page, this actually makes it very competitive. This is why keyword phrases aren’t as popular as long tail.
How is your page meant to stand out among the thousand of results?
By being specific, especially if you have a large market to compete against. This is why you should target long tail keywords because it will help decrease your competition.
Let’s go back to that example about the food blogger. There are hundreds of food bloggers out there, which means you want to use long tail keywords to give as much detail as you can to lessen your competition.
You have your idea of writing about eating in budget-friendly restaurants in New Zealand. But how could you be more specific? By adding a city name. A possible long tail keyword could then be:
Where to eat in Wellington, New Zealand on a budget?
This is better than cheap restaurants New Zealand. But you could take it even further by writing solely about a type of restaurant, a neighborhood in the city, or even both.
Cheap Italian restaurants in Mt. Cook, Wellington, New Zealand
By doing this, you will get only those people who are searching for Italian restaurants in that specific area of Wellington. Now that we are giving more detail, we’re being specific and lessening our competition.
Using great long tail keywords will result in smaller search engine results, but higher traffic quality.
Place Keywords in the Appropriate Places
Now that you’ve come up with your long tail keywords, the next thing to do is use it within your article. But where should you place those keywords?
- In the first paragraph
- Title your article with the SEO keywords
- In the URL name
- Repeat, at the most, two more times in the body (depending on the article length) and once more in the final paragraph
Write for your Audience, not for the search engines
This means a couple of things. Firstly, do not stuff your article with keywords. This will only result in poor content that isn’t readable. Search engines will pick up on it quickly. Instead, you want your writing to sound as naturally as possible. It should be as if you’re having a conversation with someone.
With that said, it’s important to put an emphasis on quality content. Write your articles naturally and with great detail. Rather than repeating your keywords, use synonyms or other related words.

That’s right, you can even optimize images for search engine results. If people do an image-based search, it could generate traffic to your website. Here are a few of ways to use images in SEO.
- Alt Text
This is the text alternative of an image. If someone is using a text-only browser, is blind and using a screen reader, or if a photo doesn’t upload properly, the alt text will be in its place to describe what the image is of.

Using keywords in an image file name or alt text can increase website visibility. Make sure to be descriptive with your alt text that incorporate keywords, along with file names that have a great description.
